Individual taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of up to $75,000 ($150,000 joint) are eligible for a full $1,200 ($2,400 joint) rebate, and an additional rebate of $500 per child. Americans will not be required to do anything to receive a rebate check, as the IRS will use a taxpayer’s 2019 tax return or their 2018 return if they have not yet filed. Make sure that you’re set up with the IRS for direct deposit into your bank account. Direct deposits should be received by 4/21/20.

If you were working for a small business and have been laid off and you don’t sign up for unemployment, talk to your business owner and ask if they are going to apply for an SBA loan to rehire you even if you can’t come into work until after the “stay at home” is over. Here’s some basic info about what a small business owner can request from SBA: Small businesses are eligible for loans to pay employees, rent and utilities. The loans are eligible for 100% loan forgiveness for the first 8 weeks of the loan. One of the provisions for forgiveness of the loan is that the business pays their employees what they were paying them before Covid. The money is supposed to be available to the business within 3 days of the application being accepted. If a business owner has already laid off workers, they can rehire employees and still get forgiveness, as long as they rehire those workers by June 30, 2020.

If you’re a sole proprietor, independent contractor, or self-employed individual you can apply for the SBA loan described above that has the first 8-week forgiveness provision.
